As mandated by the Nevada statutes, the Nevada Energy Office prepared a state energy reduction plan which requires state agencies, departments, and other entities in the Executive Branch to reduce grid-based energy purchases for state-owned buildings by 20% by 2015. The report suggests a series of immediate, short-term and long-term conservation measures to help the affected agencies meet their energy reduction goals. As of the end of 2013, electricity use in State-owned buildings has decreased 8.8% from the 2005 baseline. The Energy Office's Status of Energy Report outlines stategies the Office will pursue to achieve the 2015 target.
Senate Bill 395 of 2009 instructs the Chief of the Purchasing Division of the Department of Administration to establish standards that favor Energy Star products. The bill also puts the State Public Works Board in charge of adopting and implementing guidelines for renewable energy and efficient energy use in all state buildings. The Board adopted regulations in 2010 requiring construction projects of 20,000 square feet or greater to comply with ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007 and Energy Star.
