“The new partnership agreement with SMUD moves us closer to reducing our dependence on non-renewable energy sources,” said Ann Madden Rice, chief executive officer of UC Davis Medical Center. “Reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the Sacramento campus reflects our commitment to the environment and a mission of creating a healthier community for all.”
The 24 facilities covered by the new partnership agreement use approximately 11.4 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, which produces the equivalent of about 8,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, or about the same amount as 1,700 vehicles per year. By tapping into SMUD’s renewable resources for some of its power, UC Davis Health expects to see an approximate 11.5 percent overall carbon emission reduction.
