The Year 2000-style Nokia handset unveiled in Barcelona this week shows that geeks can lust after the latest gadgets and hanker for yesteryear simultaneously.

But there are also features that caused reality to strike with a thud: a tiny 2.4-inch display, only a 2-megapixel camera, and clunky old 2G connectivity that will be phased out in Australia by September. Forget maps, directions, and activity monitoring. There’s no GPS tracking. Retro-tech love could look desirable for a fleeting moment but finish like a first date gone terribly wrong. The BlackBerry, too, went on a memory lane trip with the brand rights owner, China’s TCL Communication, unveiling the KEY­one handset with an old-style BlackBerry Qwerty keyboard. It’s hard to know whether TCL really sees the handset as retro. Many did, as the future of phone communications is voice recognition, rather than keyboards.
