Tesla and Walmart Pause Legal Fight

On August 21, 2019, Walmart announced that it was suing Telsa over solar panel installations causing fires. Walmart claims that most of the issues stemmed from a rushed, negligent approach to the solar-powered systems’ installation that was done in 2010 by Solarcity, the solar company that Tesla acquired in 2016 for 2.6 billion dollars.

The filing claimed that SolarCity's business model meant that the solar panels were installed “haphazardly and as quickly as possible to turn a profit, and the contractors and subcontractors who performed the original solar panel installation work had not been properly hired, trained, or supervised.

August 22nd, 2019 it was announced that they are pausing the legal fight. A joint statement was released saying that the two companies said they look forward to re-activating their rooftop solar panel installations, once the two parties are certain that all of the concerns are addressed.

It wasn’t said if the lawsuit had been dropped, but New York state supreme courts show that it was returned for correction. The documents are not accessible online at this time.

Shortly after the announcement that Walmart and Tesla were pausing their case, Amazon came forward claiming that they had experienced the same mishaps with their Solarcity solar panel installation.

In June 2018, an Amazon warehouse in Redlands California had its rooftop catch fire. The fire involved a solar-powered system that was installed by Tesla’s SolarCity division.

The leading online retailer said that they have taken the steps to protect their facilities and they do not have plans to install any more solar-powered systems from Tesla.
