Solar panel installers are in big demand across the country

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), growth in the solar industry is growing at leaps and bounds, in part because the cost to install solar panels and equipment has dropped by more than 70% over the last decade. 

This is sparking an ever growing demand for knowledgeable and capable solar panels installers and other professionals tied to the industry.

And while the unemployment remains extremely low, some jobs are growing faster than other. 

Over 242,000 Americans work in solar, double the number that did in 2012. In fact, in 2018, the solar industry generated a $17 billion investment in the American economy.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reports that solar panel installers are in high demand nowadays, particularly in eight states across the country: California, Hawaii, New Mexico, Florida, North Carolina, Missouri, Minnesota, and New Jersey. 

The role is also known as a “PV installer,” and “assembles, installs, and maintains solar panel systems on rooftops or other structures.”

In 2017, the occupation saw a median pay of $18.98 per hour, or $39,490 per year. It’s projected to grow 105% by 2026, which is significantly faster than the national rate.

More importantly, an installer can diversify enough that he/she can be available to work on different projects, including those that install photovoltaic (PV) solar panels into the roofs of homes and businesses, the ones who design, install and maintain water-heating systems that use the sun’s power and solar radiant heating installer that deal with appliances.

The Solar Foundation projects that with a backlog of utility-scale projects and new policy incentives in key states, the outlook for solar jobs is expected to improve in 2019. Survey respondents predict that solar jobs will increase 7 percent in 2019, bringing the total to 259,400 jobs.
