Solar Panels Help The Homeless

A West Virginian homeless shelter called, The Harmony House is now the possessor of the largest solar panel project in the area.  

Harmony House is a shelter assisting the displaced and homeless.  It presently is taking the Virginian sunshine to brighten some significant savings and while flicking the lights on for the future.

"I believe God brought me here for a reason," said Corey Meade, Harmony House occupant. "This is my first apartment, and I'm 31.”

Harmony House's assistance have provided him a living area since March following approximately a year of being without a home.

When this project for solar panel installation is completed, it will generate 40 kilowatts of power at its peak. It's predicted to yield nearby the 50,000-kilowatt hours a year mark, delivering an expected savings of $3,000 to $5,000 annually.

"Every dime that we produce and we save, it's going to go right back into our programs," pronounced Bill Rosenberger, administrator of development for the Harmony House. "I think that's the special thing. The other thing is that this pretty forward thinking. We're doing something that nobody else is doing."

This plan was created and supervised by Solar Holler. CEO Dan Conant said there are just 800 solar panel arrays on houses or businesses in the whole state of West Virginia. But investment is building, and in areas like Ohio, it's improving exponentially.

Methods such as this are shifting all solar things related to being more affordable. Conant said the price of the panels themselves had dropped 99 percent over the last four years. The typical homeowner will meet their expenses in a decade, then they will start seeing kickbacks for the next 20 to 30 years.

The New Panels Are Helping

"Making the financing easy and accessible and affordable for folks are truly making this something that's not just environmentally friendly, but something that is good to people's wallets," Conant stated.

Thanks to an obscure person who has donated $65,000 which includes hookup charges to the power grid,  Harmony Houses solar costs have been taken care of. Harmony House could prospectively conserve $130,000 over 25 years, which is the actual term of the warranty. Each time rates go climb, that value matches, helping influence the financial assistance for people like Meade.

Solar Savings Will Make Smiles

"I think it's a pretty cool thing," Meade said.

The solar panels are presumed to be energizing Harmony House by next September. At the moment, the power bill is about $1,200 a month.
