ADB supports introduction of Cambodia’s 100 MW National Solar Park Program

A new 100 MW National Solar Park Program has been launched in Cambodia with the aid of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The program is being set up by Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC) and will focus on delivering 100 MW of PV capacity to the southeast Asian country in two phases of 30 MW and 70 MW respectively.

The ADB’s involvement extends to the provision of concessional funds to help EDC develop solar park infrastructure, the carrying out of a feasibility study for the project, and the organization of a competitive tender process in order to attract and select the most viable private sector sponsor.

The bank will also develop a bankable PPP (Public-Private Partnership) structure for the program, which will act as a template for further PPPs in Cambodia and, it is hoped, other nations in the Southeast Asia regio.

“Cambodia is blessed with excellent solar irradiation and this program will help the country bring renewable, affordable and indigenously sourced power to meet its growing energy needs,” said Ryuichi Kaga, the head of ADB’s PPP office. “The competitive tender is expected to drive solar power prices lower and bring access to affordable power to Cambodia’s people.”

In April, the ADB invested $9.2 million into Cambodia’s fledgling solar industry via Singapore developer Sunseap, which is building a 10 MW solar farm in the country.
