In Italy, solar PV generation grew by 14 percent (from 8 percent to 9 percent of the power mix) in 2017 and reached 24,811 GWh (2016: 21,757 GWh), according to provisional data from TSO Terna SpA. Thermal power generation (including biomass) increased by 4.6 percent to 199,500 GWh. The share of hydropower declined from 16 percent in 2016 to 13 percent in 2017, while that of fossil fuels (including biomass) rose from 68 percent to 70 percent. Wind generation remained stable (6 percent of the power mix).
Italy’s total electricity production in 2017 rose by 1.9 percent to 285,118 GWh compared to 2016, while demand amounted to 320,437 GWh (up by 2 percent). Power import decreased by 0.7 percent, power export decreased by16.6 percent.
