Chile inaugurates 100 MW PV plant to power the subway of Santiago

The Chilean president Michelle Bachelet has inaugurated the 100 MW »El Pelicano« PV plant, which will supply power to the subway system of the country’s capital Santiago de Chile. The facility will cover about 42 percent of the Metro’s electricity needs, both, wind and solar power, cover about 60 percent, according to an announcement of the government. The PV plant is located at La Higuera, Coquimbo Region.

In September 2017, Chilean power transmission company Transelec S.A: has acquired the switchyard that interconnects the solar project with the Integrated Central System (SIC) of Chile from US solar company Sunpower Inc. According to the company, the switchyard has additional capacity for future projects in the area. In May 2016, Sunpower signed a contract to supply 300 GWh PV power per year to Santiago’s subway.
