The Freiburg, Germany-based Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE has increased its efficiency world record for multicrystalline silicon solar cells of 21.9 percent, established in February, to 22.3 percent. According to the Institute, the cell made of n-type silicon (in the industry, for multicrystalline cells, the more cost-effective p-type silicon is usually used) is provided with an »optimized plasma texture«, while the backside contact is made using the Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact technology (TOPCon) developed at ISE. The contacts are applied to a conductive passivated surface without structuring. The ISE project partner Wacker Chemie AG supplied the high-purity silicon for the record cell. The manufacturing process will be presented at the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference (EUPVSEC) in Amsterdam on 28 September (Dr. Jan Benick,»Approaching 22% Efficiency with Multicrystalline n-Type Silicon Solar Cells«).
