Chinese-Canadian module manufacturer Canadian Solar Inc., French Photowatt, a subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles, and French ECM Greentech intend to set up a joint venture specialized in low-carbon production of advanced technology silicon ingots and wafers in France. Photowatt, Canadian Solar and ECM Greentech would own 60 percent, 30 percent and 10 percent of the equity in the JV respectively.
The JV »Photowatt Crystal Advanced« aims are to massively produce silicon ingots and wafer with the increase of its production capacity from 50 MW to 500 MW in Bougoin Jallieu and to improve more specifically, the low carbon industrialization process through the R&D. According to the companies, the establishment of the JV is being reviewed and subject to the clearance by the relevant authorities.
Furthermore, Photowatt, with its current facilities and its capacity to develop new processes, would focus on its research and development activities, rebranded »Photowatt Lab«, in liaison with the EDF Group’s R&D unit and other research centers such as INES or the Ile-de-France Photovoltaic Institute (IPVF). »The aim is to foster the emergence of new technological solutions for photovoltaic cells and modules and to test them under pre-industrial conditions,« says the company.
