Canadian Solar will develop and build 112 MW of PV in the state of Pernambuco, after being awarded the project in Brazil’s power auction on December 18.

According to the China-based company, construction will begin in 2020 and the project should reach commercial operation by January 2021.

The project, named Salgueiro, was awarded to Canadian Solar in the A-4 power auction, on the basis of 20-year PPA at the rate of BRL 145.44 ($44)/MWh.

Solar took the bulk of the capacity offered in the auction, with approximately 85% of the 674 MW of renewable energy capacity auctioned off. Projects auctioned in this round are to be located in four states – Piauí (240 MW), Pernambuco (147 MW), Bahia (122 MW) and Sao Paolo (75 MW).

Canadian Solar’s project development arm has been active in Brazil, having begun construction on the Pirapora I, II and III projects in the state of Minas Gerais. EDF Energies Nouvelle acquired an 80% interest in all three projects and will operate them alongside Canadian Solar.
