The government of the Portuguese Autonomous Region of the Azores announced the construction of the archipelago’s first MW-sized PV project.

The PV power plant will be built on the island of Corvo by local power utility Empresa de Eletrciidade dos Açores (EDA) in 2018. Construction of the project, named Central Fotovoltaica do Corvo, is planned to begin by the end of this year. More details on the new project were not provided.

“In the Azores, there are more than two dozen power stations from renewable sources. This system consists of seven wind farms, 12 hydroelectric power stations and two geothermal power stations. Soon we will have another geothermal plant on Terceira Island, ” said the president of the regional government, Vasco Cordeiro.

Currently, all these renewable energy power plants cover around 35% of the archipelago’s power demand. The prevailing source is geothermal, followed by wind and hydro.

The Azores is also hosting a MW-scale renewable energy plus storage system of German specialist Younicos. The system is located on the island of Graciosa and features 4.5 MW of wind power and 1 MW of solar along with the 2.8 MW lithium-ion battery park which is fully integrated with the intelligent energy management system being developed by Younicos.
