Natural gas price increases are driving force of recent residential gas rates in PG&E bills, according to PG&E company spokesman Donald Cutler. Originally implemented in August, the 21 percent increase was recorded between December 2015 and December 2016. “Those are big numbers and we know that that can be really frustrating for customers, so we want them to know what we’re here to help,” reassured Cutler.
Despite their frustrations, customers have been encouraged to utilize online tools the utility provider offers to better understand and manage their electricity and gas usage. Accusations against PG&E using the gas rate increase being used to pay for fines and penalties against the company in lieu of the San Bruno pipeline explosion (roughly a $2.7 billion in addition to a $1.6 billion fine from the California Public Utilities Commission and $3 million fine in a criminal case related to the incident) spread rapidly.
