Governments of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have established a strategic partnership to progress the region’s energy transition.
The ASEAN region now has a wider target of reaching 23% renewables by 2025, after the various countries agreed that a regional target could help spur investment.
Energy ministers from ASEAN member states including, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam as well as the Director-General of IRENA will now develop an MoU for long-term co-operation on renewable energy development, integration, costing and financing.
IRENA director-deneral Adnan Amin, said: “Increasing investment in renewable energy across Southeast Asia’s growing populations will have significant social and economic benefits across the region, liberating them from expensive fossil fuel imports, while boosting economic growth, supporting energy security, job creation and national resilience,”
At the same meeting, in Pasay City, the Philippines, IRENA also launched a report on accelerating mini-grids in the Philippines, which PV Tech reported on last week.
