‘Silicon Module Super League’ (SMSL) member Canadian Solar has acquired an 80.6MW solar PV project under development at Guimarania, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Canadian Solar will build the project starting in early 2018 and will provide modules from its local factory in Sao Paulo. Commercial operation is due Q4 2018.

The Guimarania project holds a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Electrical Energy Commercialization Chamber (CCEE), following Brazil’s second Reserve Energy Auction at BRL$290/MWh (US$91.77).

"The Guimarania project is an exciting addition to our attractive utility-scale project pipeline in Brazil,” said Dr. Shawn Qu, chairman and chief executive of Canadian Solar. "We will continue to evaluate additional opportunities in this important emerging market so as to accelerate the adoption of the affordable, reliable and clean solar energy across the country."

The firm recently completed construction and started commercial operation of a 27.3MW plant in Tottori Prefecture, Japan.

Brazil is approaching its first energy oversupply situation since global records began.
