Algerian renewable energy project developer Soliwind has announced that it has started construction of a 1.39 MW rooftop PV system on the roof of Oran’s new airport, the Ahmed Ben Bella International Airport.
The installation will be located on the airport’s roof surface of 15,900 m2 and will use 5,362 solar modules. The company said it expects to finalize the project’s construction by the end of this year, and that the installation will produce around 2 million kWh per year thus being able to cover approximately 30% of the power needs of the facility.
The company said the project is also complying with the environmental requirements of HQE (High Environmental Quality) new buildings.
As for its solar business, Soliwind develops both ground-mounted and rooftop projects. The company also provides services for the deployment of floating PV systems.
Algeria aims to cover 27% of its electricity demand with renewable energy by 2030. The country expects to reach this goal by installing 22 GW of renewable energy power stations, of which 13.5 GW will come from PV. Around 3 GW of solar must be installed in the period between 2015 and 2020, while the remaining 10.57 GW is scheduled for the period spanning 2021 to 2030.
