A letter signed today by five renewable energy associations urges Congress to oppose the $1.7 billion cut to the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) FY18 budget proposed by the Trump Administration.
The letter, which is addressed to the chairmen and ranking members of the Senate and House appropriations committees, is signed by American Council On Renewable Energy, American Wind Energy Association, Geothermal Energy Association, National Hydropower Association, and Solar Energy Industries Association.
Cutting 66 percent of the U.S. Department of Energy’s current funding would “seriously jeopardize” U.S. leadership renewable energy, the associations said in the letter, adding that such a drop in funding would harm U.S. competitiveness in a global industry that represents a multi-trillion-dollar business opportunity.
In addition to the significant development and deployment of clean energy innovations through DOE offices and programs, the associations said, the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory has secured more than 100 patents and has been the source of technological breakthroughs that have improved productivity and reduced the costs of wind turbines, solar panels, geothermal systems, biofuels, EVs and energy storage systems. Among other things, the letter noted the 74 ARPA-E-funded projects that have secured more than $1.8 billion in private sector investment.
