China installed 34.92 GW PV capacity between January and July 2017, thus exceeding last year’s 34.54 GW by approximately 380 MW, according to consultancy Asia Europe Clean Energy (Solar) Advisory Co. Ltd. (AECEA) citing recent energy statistics. Consequently, by the end of July, China was home to in total 112.34 GW and therefore already exceeded its 13th Five-Year-Plan (2016-2020) target of 105 GW solar PV by about 7 percent.
According to official data released by China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) in H1 2017 in total 24.4 GW were added, thus in July alone another 10.52 GW were installed, although down by 3 GW compared to June this year, says the consultancy. Till the end of Q3, demand is expected to slow down, so in Q4. AECEA raises its 2017 forecast and estimates that China might be able to install between 40 GW and up to 45 GW in the full year (up between 16 to 30 percent year-over-year).
During the January through July 2017 period, China added 1.09 GW nuclear, 6.69 GW hydro, 7.3 GW wind and 18.84 GW thermal power capacities. Overall, since 2010, the share of renewables in China’s power mix has increased by 8 percent, while coal decreased by 11 percent, says AECEA. Last year, 65 percent of the China’s power were generated by burning coal. Approximately 200 GW of coal-fired power plants are scheduled to come online by 2020.
