Malaysia’s 460 MW solar tender announced in March has been oversubscribed almost four times. The Energy Commission Malaysia (EC) received technical bids from 116 bidders totaling 1,632 MW, according to the consultancy Mercom Capital Group.
The solar projects will be developed in Peninsular Malaysia and the Sabah/Labuan region. According to a former announcement of the EC, the facilities will be connected to the grid and sell its energy to Tenaga Nasional Berhad or Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd under the solar Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
In Peninsular Malaysia, developers bid for project sizes in the range of 1 MW to 30 MW, and in the Sabah/Labuan region, bids were for projects in the range of 1 MW to 10 MW, says the company. The tariffs quoted ranges between a high of MYR 0.5300 ($0.12) and a low of MYR 0.3398 ($0.08), says Mercom. The lowest price quoted was for a 30 MW solar project. The projects must be linked to the grid by end of FY 2019-20.
