Berlin-based gas and power provider Gasag announced that it will invest around €32 million ($37.7 million) in the construction of three solar plants in Germany’s eastern region of Brandenburg.
The company said that the solar facilities will have a combined capacity of approximately 40 MW, and will be built over the next two or three years. The company’s unit Spreegas has recently completed construction of a 10 MW solar park in the district of Spree-Neiße, which was selected by the German government in an auction for large-scale solar projects it held in the past years.
The municipalities of the areas where the new projects will be located will be offered to buy a stake in the projects. In doing so, the municipalities would increase their income and, at the same time, would change the way they manage their power supply, the company said. Spreegas also said it will contract local companies in all of the project phases.
Gasag built its first ground-mounted PV plant at its gas facility in Berlin in 2011. The company is also planning to invest in wind and biogas power projects.
