Renewables and climate change

There is widespread agreement among climate scientists that man-made climate change can also be changed by man. Fossil fuels are a finite and highly polluting form of energy. The energy needs of the planet are expected to rise, so how are we going to produce the energy we need? The Paris Agreement called for reducing carbon emissions worldwide. But to successfully limit the increase in global temperatures, energy use would have to be completely decarbonized in less than 50 years. That seems like a nearly impossible task since the expected tripling of the world’s economy by 2060 will change everything. This means renewable energy must grow much faster.

We need renewables and energy efficiency

We did not get into this global mess in a couple of years, and we will not solve the problem in a couple of years either. The planet’s energy needs need to be met by a combination of renewables and energy efficiency. To keep the temperature increase “well below 2°C” (as per the Paris Agreement), renewable energy must grow to 65% of global energy supply by 2050, compared to the current 15%, IRENA’s analysis indicates. Around 66 percent of current greenhouse emissions originate from energy production and use, making decarbonization vital to meeting international climate goals. The cost of electricity from renewable energy technologies has fallen steadily in recent years. This is especially true since 2000, with the rise of solar and wind power generation as useful commercial options. Today, power generation from renewable sources has become increasingly competitive with,  fossil-based or nuclear power.

The solution is ultimately solar power

For approximately one-third of the world’s anticipated energy use in the coming 20-25 years, no practical decarbonization solutions currently exist. Research and development (R&D) need to happen quicker, particularly to make renewable energy helpful for a wider range of uses in buildings, heat, and transport. Renewable power also requires further innovation to optimize system integration.

There has never been a better time to install a solar energy system!
