When climate scientists analyze the earth’s pollution and the consequent disasters that befall the planet, they also sometimes look for alternatives. Solar power is the only long-term solution to this quagmire of fossil fuel burning. We don’t often think of the ocean warming along with the earth’s atmosphere, but that’s what’s occurring. Earth's temperature is rising, and it isn't just in the air around us. More than 90 percent of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gas emissions has been absorbed into the oceans that cover 66 percent of the planet's surface. The oceans are rising, too, and that tells a story of how humans are changing the planet.
The rate at which the oceans are heating has nearly doubled since 1992, and that heat is reaching deeper waters, according to a recent study. Additionally, concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have been rising steadily over the years due to the continued burning of fossil fuels. Scientists say the massing of heat in the oceans is the most persuasive evidence of how fast earth is warming. This is due to heat-trapping gases released by the burning of fossil fuels. Oceans have a nearly endless capacity to hold heat. Therefore ocean temperatures, unlike temperatures on land, are slow to fluctuate from natural forces, such as seasonal weather patterns or volcanic eruptions. But in the oceans, temperatures vary little. This makes it easier to filter out the influence of human-caused climate change from other possible causes of increasing ocean heat.
Ocean temperature represents a clear signal of climate change, but a challenge for researchers is that the record only goes back a limited time. Since the early 2000s, an international effort called Argo has launched nearly 4,000 ocean-going sensors that gather important data about the oceans, including temperature. As oceans heat up, thermal expansion causes sea levels to rise even more from the melting of land ice. Almost half of the sea level rise so far has come from ocean warming, according to a new study. Much of the rest comes from the melting of ice on Antarctica and Greenland.
