Things You Might Not Have Known About Solar
If you’re interested in going solar, you’re probably also interested in finding out everything about it. However, there’s a lot to learn, and you might be a little bit overwhelmed. You might want some easier to digest information so you can start learning about solar but not be too overwhelmed by tons of information at once. Because of this, we have a blog here for you with some quick and easy to understand facts so you can start learning more about solar without having to read too much at once.
Installing solar is cheaper than it’s ever been, with costs still falling.
As solar panels become more efficient and solar becomes more mainstream, the costs continue to drop. More installers are available than ever and more solar panels are being manufactured than ever before, allowing for even more price drops. The cost of going solar has fallen by 9 percent in the past year alone, with no signs of stopping. And that’s before all the amazing savings benefits you can get from tax credits, rebates, and net metering.
What is net metering?
You might be wondering what net metering is and how that’s an amazing savings benefit. If you produce an excess amount of energy that you don’t need, you can sell it back to your utility company. They get your energy, which they can then redistribute to other houses on the grid who need that energy. And in return, you’ll get credits that you can use to pay off your electric bill. This means that you could never pay for a utility bill again if you consistently overproduce energy and sell it back to your utility company!
You can use your home insurance for your panels.
On top of getting a warranty from your solar company, you can also use your home insurance to protect your solar panels. They are technically part of your home, and therefore, they are usually covered. Just be sure to confirm with your insurance agent that they do include your solar panels in your plan.
Usually, HOA policies cannot prevent solar installations.
The Homeowner’s Association (HOA) does have the right to prevent you from installing your solar in certain instances because of the aesthetics of the way you’re installing them, but they cannot prevent you from installing solar completely. You should consult with them about what design would be appropriate and then consult your solar installer so they can design your solar in a way that complements what the HOA finds aesthetically pleasing.
Solar panels will not require a lot of maintenance.
Many people see how massive solar panels are and think they’ll require a lot of maintenance. However, they are actually very durable and don’t need a whole lot of work done to them. You’ll want to get an annual inspection from your solar company to ensure nothing is going wrong, but other than that, you won’t need to do a whole lot in terms of repairs. They’re made of glass, but they are made to handle the weather, and can even withstand hail. You’ll need to clean them if a lot of dirt, bird droppings, snow, etc. pile up, but cleaning them is easy. Basically, you won’t have to think about your panels a whole lot after they’re installed.
