Do the advantages of going solar outweigh the disadvantages?
The solar industry is an ever-growing and ever-changing industry. Going along with that, the pros and cons are constantly shifting and changing. In the last two years alone, so much has changed in the solar industry that it’s almost morphed shape. Two years ago, you might have thought the disadvantages outweighed the advantages, and therefore, decided not to go solar. However, a lot has changed since then. Read this advantages versus disadvantages blog to get the most up to date information on whether or not you should be going solar right now.
Advantage: The return on investment of a solar system far outweighs the initial cost.
One of the main reasons people now choose solar is because of the financial reasons. The payback period can be reached in as little as seven years, and after that, you’ll either be saving money or making money if you have net metering. You may view the initial cost as a huge disadvantage, but overall, you’ll be saving a lot more money than the installation fees.
Advantage: Solar energy is renewable.
With the sun lasting another 6.5 billion years and fossil fuels only lasting a few more decades, going solar just makes sense, since it’s inevitable. Not only are fossil fuels running out and ruining our planet, but they’re also the cause for the rise of utility bills. Getting off fossil fuels as soon as possible is how to ensure you save the most money possible.
Advantage: Solar panels are easy to maintain.
While installing solar is quite the feat, after that, they’re super easy to maintain and can last anywhere from 25 to 40 years. Just get an annual inspection and occasionally clean them off with a hose, and you’ll be set!
Disadvantage: The sun isn’t constantly shining.
The sun doesn’t always shine, it shines at different times and intensity depending on the season and your location, and several days of cloud cover could decrease efficiency. However, none of those factors make it useless, especially if you have batteries, which will allow you to store energy in times of need.
Disadvantage: It isn’t totally clean energy.
While solar is seen as a clean alternative, the process of actually manufacturing the panels does cause some pollution. Unfortunately, that’s just a fact of the production of any form of energy. However, the amount of pollution caused by production is tremendously less than the pollution caused by fossil fuels.
Disadvantage: Initial installation costs.
No one can deny that the initial cost of solar panel installation is a hefty fee. Despite the return on investment, you still are going to have to come up with the money to install your solar panels, to begin with. Luckily, there are two great solutions: you can lease your panels and you can turn to community solar. If you don’t want to do either of those things, obviously those options won’t outweigh the disadvantage, but they do exist.
The bottom line: the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
While some of the disadvantages of going solar may seem like tremendous hurdles, they’re truly not. Battery storage solves the sun problem. The pollution of producing a panel is nothing compared to fossil fuels. And there are multiple solutions to the cost of installing solar panels. The bottom line is that you should be installing solar.
