Four Frequent Hazards of Roof-Mounted Solar Panels
Technology has definitely made solar panels (also referred to as photovoltaic, or PV, systems) more productive than ever before, allowing companies to save money and save the environment at the same time. Around the United States, businesses are jumping on the solar panel bandwagon, and more people are installing solar onto their roofs than ever before. The industry continues to climb, with thousands of jobs being created every year, which is the opposite of what is happening to companies that are using fossil fuels.
However, even with these advantages, there is adversity to overcome if your business plans to invest in a roof-mounted solar panel system. Despite all these pros of going solar, there are also some serious hazards that you should be taking into consideration when you decide to make the switch over to solar. As long as you’re prepared for all the potential hazards of going solar, you’ll be able to keep your roof prepared to avoid dealing with any damages.
Check the weight limit of your roof.
To reduce the risk of roof collapse or degradation, check that your roof is capable of accommodating the extra weight of solar panels and associated equipment. No two solar systems are created equal, so you’ll want to make sure the amount of weight your roof can handle is capable of dealing with the weight of the system. You may also want to consider replacing your roof completely, as the system can last 25 years or more.
Avoid shock hazards with remote monitoring systems.
When a ground fault or short circuit provides a new way for electrical current to travel down to the earth, a “blind spot” is created. These blind spots allow exposed wires to touch a metal roof, which is obviously a massive electrical safety hazard. Some original fuse-based ground-fault detector interrupters cannot detect or de-energize this type of ground fault. As a result, the current continues to flow, which poses shock and fire hazards. Fortunately, newer PV systems often include technology that enables companies to perform remote monitoring so potential issues like these can be quickly identified and resolved. Just ask your installer if your system includes this technology to make sure you’ll avoid these shock hazards.
Get your panels tested for windy conditions.
With their added surface area, solar panels greatly increase a building’s exposure to wind damage, as the space below the panels can add extra pressure to the roof. Strong winds (speeds of 70 miles or more per hour) can also cause PV systems to shift or detach completely, which can lead to injuries or property damage. When investing in a solar system, make sure to find one that can withstand the winds in your area and make sure they’ve been tested for extremely windy conditions.
Get extra protection against severe weather.
Severe weather conditions such as ice, snow, and hail should also be taken into account beyond wind or storms. Snow adds extra weight to the roof beyond the weight of the panels alone, and hail and ice can damage solar panels’ protective coatings and expose the electrical wiring. This type of damage can result in panel failure and electrical hazards. Fortunately, panels are now available with extra protection to mitigate hail risks; investigate all your options before you install.
Make sure your panels have protection against fire.
Fires can spread quickly due to rapid heat buildup in the open spaces under the panels, like any source of electricity. For roof-mounted PV systems, installing solar panels can also alter a roof’s resistance rating, so discuss what measures you can take, such as conducting proper maintenance and installing the latest detection technology (as discussed above), to mitigate risk. Make sure your panels are protected against fire hazards.
