4 Reasons You’re Not Making the Switch to Solar
When it comes to making the switch to solar, many people have very hesitant reactions. They have a lot of reasons why they shouldn’t, but what they don’t realize is that usually, those reasons aren’t actually valid. They’ve heard the myths and they’ve believed them, but they haven’t heard the whole story. When it comes down to it, green energy is inevitable, and it’s only a matter of when. After all, fossil fuels are a limited resource, so eventually, everyone is going to be forced to make the switch. Here are the four most common reasons have for not going solar, debunked.
“It Costs Too Much.”
While it’s true that it costs quite a bit up front to get solar panels, there are also a couple other truths to consider. The first one is that since 2008, the prices of solar panels have dropped nearly 80%. The prices of solar panels are now more affordable than ever. If you can’t save enough money, you can always take out a loan to go solar. Your wallet will thank you in the long run, as solar panels are going to save you a lot more than they’ll cost you. You’ll never have to worry about ever-increasing utility bill prices again. If you’re on-grid, you’ll only need to pay for being hooked up (and any power you aren’t able to generate, but hopefully you’ll read more of our blog and that won’t be an issue). If you’re on-grid, you’ll also be able to make money by selling any extra generated energy to the power company. If you’re off-grid, you’ll generate all your energy completely by yourself and won’t ever have to deal with an energy company again.
“There isn’t enough sunlight in my area to have solar.”
This is perhaps one of the most common solar myths. The idea that if it’s a cloudy day, you won’t have power. It’s simply untrue. Solar power is powered by UV rays, not the amount of sunshine you see in the sky. These UV rays will reach your home no matter how cloudy it is outside, so even if you live in Seattle, solar is the right choice for you.
“It’s too hard for me to install and maintain it, I’d just mess it up.”
First thing’s first: you probably won’t install it. While some people do make the courageous decision to DIY install it, you’ll most likely have an installer come out and do it for you. As for the maintenance, it’s fairly minimal. Just brush away any debris you notice and clean it off with some water a couple times a year. If you notice anything more wrong with it, you should have a warranty and be able to have someone else take care of it. Your solar panels should last you 25-30 years and all you’ll really have to do is clean it.
“Solar panels are ugly.”
Even if you think panels themselves are ugly, with new inventions like solar shingles coming out all the time, there are tons of new ways to make your solar home aesthetically pleasing while it saves the planet and saves you money.
When it comes to going solar, there’s really no excuse not to make the switch.
