Using a Solar Panel on a Narrowboat

Rooftops aren’t the only place for solar panels, and if you own a narrowboat and are looking for a great way to explore waterways with additional independence, solar energy could be your solution. Sometimes people just need to get away for a long time, and solar energy could help you do that even when you aren’t in motion.

How a Solar Panel Can Help You Gain Independence on Your Boat

With the installation of solar panels, you can gain many benefits to your boat that you wouldn’t otherwise have. For example, the solar panel will make it so you no longer have to restart your engine. Without electricity, you’re probably forced to bring an ice cooler onto your boat, but with solar panels, you can bring an entire refrigerator. You can watch TV on your deck with the water and nature right by your side and not have to worry that your drinks will be cool. All in all, installing a solar system on your narrowboat will not only make your life easier, but it will also allow you to spend more time with yourself on the water.

I’m convinced. Now how do I get started setting a panel up?

For starters, you’ll want to figure out which kind of solar panel is ideal for your boat. The main way people mount solar panels to their boats is by using a standard solar panel, which is framed in aluminum. The reason these are popular is because they are so cost-effective. They’re cheap and they produce a lot of energy. They just need simple things like aluminum brackets or tiltable frames to be mounted. A tiltable frame would be an ideal option as your panel will need to be at a good angle for facing the sun. You’ll mount one of these frames using glue, which will be applied to the feet. In addition, the feet themselves with be able to adjust easily depending on the shape of your boat.

Another option is a semi-flexible solar panel. These are also applied to the boat using glue. Because of the flexible nature of these panels, they will be form-fitted to the boat directly. These panels are also extremely thin, which means you won’t have to worry about them tangling up in your ropes. They will also be much easier to clean and work around.

What if I don’t want the panel stuck to my boat?

Because of the nature of gluing on solar panels, you might be concerned that it will be stuck there, and perhaps you don’t want it to be. If this is the case, you also have the option of getting a portable solar panel, which will only be taken out when it’s needed. The downside of this kind of panel is that it can’t be used consistently and will need to be brought out when you’re already on your boat and ready to go. But if you don’t care about that and would just rather not glue a panel to your boat, this is probably the best option for you.

Which type of silicon is right for me?

The type of silicon in your panel is really based on personal preference. But considering the limited space on a boat, the monocrystalline kind, while more expensive, will probably be your best bet. You’ll pay more, but you won’t need to buy as many panels to get all the energy you need.
