Can I go solar if I live in an apartment?

Solar energy is often thought of as a homeowner’s product. Because of the apparent need to install large panels on the roof, something a person renting out a small apartment space can’t do without the proper approvals, many may believe solar energy simply isn’t an option for them. However, even helping out a little is a greater impact than not using solar energy at all. There are also ways you can help out a lot while still living in an apartment. While you might not be able to install solar panels on your own roof anytime soon, here are some other key ways you can start going solar today.

How You Can Use a Solar Charger

A solar charger is like any other phone charger, with one key difference: it gets charged using the sun. Instead of plugging it into the wall and using up electricity, simply place these chargers out in the sun with your phone or tablet plugged into it. The pros vastly outweigh the cons here: your phone is being charged, you’re not using energy that’s damaging to the planet, and you’re not spending extra money on your electric bill that’s unnecessary! Just be careful not to forget it outside.

Smaller Solar Panels for Smaller Spaces

Maybe you want to power your TV or your fridge, and a solar charger simply won’t work for large appliances like these. Again, you can’t install large panels on the roof of your apartment complex without approval from your landlord, but still, you have options. Mini solar panels can be placed outside and then connected to power modules. Using these power modules, you can plug it into the wall to power a socket. You can even plug your television directly into it. If you find you have more space than you initially thought, you can easily add more of these small solar panels. Because an apartment is such a small space, you might be able to power a large chunk of your apartment in no time. One major drawback of having solar panels installed on the roof of a house is that while they can be moved, it’s often not worth the hassle. With mini solar panels, it’s easy to take them with you, and definitely worth it.

Solar Farms and Joining a Community

Becoming part of a community is a great way to get your solar energy and be a part of something bigger. It’s also a great way to get all the energy you need without having to buy a lot of smaller parts and power one appliance at a time. Solar farms are large areas of solar panels, wherein a group of people all invest in the cost of the solar panels. This is a great way of doing a lot while also not having to struggle with the size of where you live or your landlord. Some even save you money by having cheaper options. Check out any solar farms that are close to you to find ways you can power your living space without having to worry about where you live.

Sharing with a Smaller Community

You don’t have to go to a solar farm to get the larger amount of energy you need, either. One other way you can power your entire apartment while also being part of a community is buying excess solar energy from your neighbor. If someone has a house with solar panels on it down the street from you, you are able to buy their excess energy and use it in your own home using batteries.
