Pollution is the scourge the entire globe must come to terms with now before it is too late. Climate scientists have warned for years about mankind’s headlong rush into the global warming abyss. There are solutions, but they will not come quickly. We must also immediately cut our consumption of fossil fuels. Fortunately, there is a renewable option that is gaining considerable momentum. The cost of solar panels continues to fall, so it is no surprise that more people are adopting solar. The reasons for this can vary, but most people enjoy generating their own power and being independent of large power grids that may have power outages at the most inconvenient times. But for most home and business owners, financial considerations are the prime mover behind their solar aspirations.
The electric industry sometimes makes the argument that utilities should charge net metering customers for energy deposits and withdrawals. In promoting a change to the net metering law in Minnesota, for example, State Representative Pat Garofalo said solar customers are “able to use the grid without charge and this means higher rates for other consumers.”
However, there is a compelling case that says utilities should allow solar customers to use the grid at no charge or that utilities should provide incentives to solar customers. After all, solar photovoltaic systems produce the most energy during long sunny summer days when the demand for electricity is high and it costs more money to generate electricity. Thus, according to this argument, the excess solar generation deposited into the grid during the day is more valuable than the electricity withdrawn at nighttime. Regardless of the solar system installed, every effort in this direction is a positive one in an era where the United States president promotes “clean coal” and nuclear energy. Why are some politicians resistant to solar power, despite the overwhelming scientific evidence? Fossil fuel producers know that their supply of damaging fuels is extremely limited and will run out in about fifty years. Some of them put their own profits ahead of the health of humans, animals, and plants, who are all vulnerable to the dangers of pollution.
